The Sky Is Falling and Falling And Falling

It seems like no matter where we turn all we here is bad news. Every news show and pseudo-news show on TV says the stock market is plunging, (That word is just slightly overused.) We are told the real estate market is horrible, although we are never told that it is the case in a few select markets like Florida, Phoenix, Southern California and a few other places. The picture is painted that the financial end of the world is near. I came across a story the other day that said the new housing starts are down to a 5 year low. Of course the headline didn’t say that over 1 million new homes will still be started this year.

Negative news sells. Negative news builds headlines for print publications, and TV news. It is amazing to me how many so-called credible news people spew out reports that are published by third parties, but they never ask questions or investigate the story for further detail. There is a reason why insiders in the TV news business call their newscasts a "show."

While we hear words like “plunging”, “plummet” and others, we can make an active choice. We can be sucked into this swirling mess, (think of the appliance in your home where the water swirls), or we can look at times like these as an opportunity to work a little harder, work a lot smarter and move ahead of the crowd. It might mean making 10% more cold calls, or 15% more new contacts. My point is that if we don’t let the "noise" distract us from our mission, we can still come out ahead.

Successful investors like Warren Buffet look at times like these as the opportunity to purchase good companies at sale prices. Regardless of the business you are in, look at times like these to provide more and better value to your customers, and help them solve their problems. Just don’t listen to all the noise. We should ask ourselves the following question, "Is the market down 10% or do we still have 90% of our original value?" How we answer that question dictates whether we win or lose.

Trust Me, My Lips Are Moving

As I write this, I am watching Chris Wallace on FOX News Sunday interview yet another Washington politician.  I am truly amazed that regardless of the question Wallace asks, he never gets a straight answer.  It's amazing that anything gets accomplished in Washington with the way all the politicians and their appointed lackeys just dodge and weave from the truth.  It must not be in their blood to provide a direct question with a straight answer.

If any of us in business behaved this way with our clients and customers, we would be out of business.  The best way to win the trust of a customer is to provide a truthful straight answer.  If the customer cannot handle the truth, chances are they are not a true customer anyway.

When we truthful with our clients and customers, we develop a bond of trust.  If we want a long-term relationship, trust is paramount.  It's no guarantee that we will make the sale, but it sure improves the odds.

No Place For A Man

I am in New York City as I write this.  We came to NYC for my daughter's surprise wedding shower.  I have never experienced something like this before.  I didn't mind helping set it up, preparing the tables, seats etc.  But I had to wait for my daughter to show up.  Her fiancé had to craft a story to get her to her sister's house.  While waiting I had the opportunity sit quietly while about 16 to 17 women sat around and talked about showers and weddings.  I wasn't sure what to do, but being in New York City, I took my cue from the subway system.  I just sat there quietly with my mouth shut and tried not to make eye contact.
