January 2006

Seems Like Time Just Flu By

I'm getting this months newsletter out later than I had planned.  As soon as we returned from our Christmas break, My wife Linda, and I immediately came down with the flu.  What a great way to begin the new year!  I'm healthy now, and have been for the past week, but consequently all those projects that were going to happen in early January, didn't!

I hope you have been able to avoid the little flu bug.  It's nasty.

Plan Now to Succeed

It's a new year, and of course every sales person, business owner, and manager should have a plan for the upcoming business year. Well, yes you should have a plan!  What's that? You haven't put one together?  OK, it's never to late, and if you can't really plan out the entire year, try to plan the next 3 to 4 four months.  You really should have some kind of idea where you think your business is going to come from.

Just because you develop a plan, it doesn't mean that you can't make changes mid-stream.  I would really be surprised if in a month or two you didn't have a need to make some adjustments.  That's fine.  The important thing is to have a guide of some sort for your business.

KEEP BUSY

I don't know what you call it, but the busier I am the more I accomplish. You might be scratching your head now, thinking "What the heck is he talking about?"  Here's my point.  I seem to go in cycles, where I have a lot of business activity, and a lot of business-related activity like chamber functions, meetings with associations, board meetings and the like.

Then I get into a cycle where I am only spending time on client projects and nothing else.  Suddenly I have lots of free time.  The only problem is, the more "free" time I have the less I accomplish.  For me, "free time" seems to amount to "doing nothing" time.  But when I get involved with a lot of activities pulling at me from several different directions, suddenly I get more done.  I think it's the pressure of knowing I have to accomplish something, because the next task is coming up right behind it.

We all have a tendency to waste time when we have too much free time.  If that is the case for you, get busy.  Join an organization or two, volunteer, do anything but don't just look for an immense amount of "down time" because it really does seem to "keep you down!"
