THE GEEK DOTH SPEAK

Let me establish this right upfront. I use "Geek" in the most complimentary term. In my mind a "Geek" is one who has a great understanding of technology. Now to my story:
I recently had a problem with my email messages bouncing back from a few addresses that are held by friends and business associates. Since the technical information telling me what went wrong is beyond my comprehension, I contacted the provider of my email service. They looked into it, said they understood the problem and would have a specialist contact me.

The next day I received an email message from the specialist who attempted to explain the problem. Unfortunately that specialist only spoke "Geek". I read it, re-read it, took an aspirin and read it again. I had no idea what he was saying.

How does that make one feel as a "customer" of a business? In my case it is making me think I might want to shift my website and email business to someone else. Think of the money this company spends on marketing and advertising trying to lure in new customers. But when they have an existing customer, and don't communicate well, they risk losing the customer, and blowing all the money and effort that went into getting that customer in the first place.

The moral of the story: Speak your customer's language!

AVOIDING BURNOUT

We always hear about burnout during the Christmas holiday season.  That's not the point of the holidays, regardless of which one you celebrate.  Too many people focus on trying to do too many things in too short a time.  Relax!  The holidays should be a time of family get-togethers, fun, cheer, and and just plain winding down.  My concern is that "Burnout" could spread to the wrong people.

Years ago in another life (the early '80s to be exact) I had a radio show that was a bit bizarre.  A close friend (Bill Craig) and I created a daily program to run during the holiday season that was supposed to be "Letters to Santa". Our characters of Santa and his elf Pudgy would read letters that children mailed to the radio station.  No one wrote in, so we made 'em up!

In an effort to avoid burnout, I thought I would share one of the episodes with you.  Listen to what would happen if Santa Claus became burned out.

Enjoy:     "Burned Out Santa"
